Fact Check: Did protesters attack the Access bank in Ilorin?

Protesters on Wednesday went on rampage across some States in the country.

In the wake of the protest, many commercial institutions were attacked and destroyed by irate protesters.

Among many banks that were reportedly destroyed was a branch of Access Bank in Ilorin.

Why the Protest?

The protests were in reaction to the scarcity of new naira notes and how some commercial banks are reportedly refusing to take the old currency, in line with a position taken by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Although the Supreme Court had ruled that the February 10 deadline set by CBN be suspended temporarily.

The Court again n on Wednesday also adjourned the case on the naira swap policy till February 22 for hearing of the consolidated suits by 10 states.

The court joined Katsina, Lagos, Cross Rivers, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Sokoto States as co-plaintiffs in the suit challenging the Naira Redesign policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Similarly, the apex court joined Edo and Bayelsa states in support of the Federal Government on implementation of the naira swap policy.

The six states in their respective motions for joinder had pitched their tents with the three aggrieved states, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kogi states that initially ignited the suit.

Findings

The FactCheck247 discovered that some online Facebook pages posted a video of how a branch of Access Bank in Ilorin was destroyed by protesters.

One of the pages that posted the story was that of a radio station based in Ilorin, Albarka 89.9fm. 

The station posted the video with the caption “Video; New Naira notes scarcity: Mob seen destroying a bank in Ilorin, Kwara state

Another page which belongs to Goldmyne Entertainment also posted the video with the caption “Access bank on Taiwo Street, Ilorin, Kwara State being attacked.

Which Access bank was attacked?

The Factcheck247 gathered that a branch of Access Bank in Orovwohworun area of Udu in Warri, Delta State was attacked according to Channels Television.

The Factcheck247 also discovered that another branch of Access bank was attacked in Benin City, Edo State Capital on Wednesday in the wake of the protest.

Verdict

The Factcheck247 concludes that even though protests were held in some parts of Ilorin, neither a branch of Access Bank nor any other bank was attacked or vandalized in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
